So you want a career in sales? You want to be a 6-figure income earner? You came to the right place. In this post, I am going to share with you my top 13 favorite business books that helped me grow my blog to earning 4 figures a month and land my dream job in medical device sales.
I grew up as the kid that would read the first 3 chapters of a book, skim the middle, then read the last chapter. Thankfully, Audible has helped all of our ADD tendencies. Now you can learn while you drive, workout, eat, get ready for bed, etc.
- Sell it Like Serhant by Ryan Serhant. Ryan is known as the star of Million Dollar Listing New York. A lot of people don’t know how he broke into the business of real estate. Ryan became NYC’s top luxury broker just a few short years after spending his childhood growing up on a farm in Houston Texas. Ryan is entertaining to listen to, and his advice on the “3 Fs” is GOLDEN.
- Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss. Chris is a former international hostage negotiator who delivers a field-tested approach to high-stakes negotiations. In the business of medical device sales, your negotiation strength means everything. You negotiate for time, cases, commission, support, EVERYTHING. Funny enough, my mom suggested I read this book as my “marriage counseling” book. Savage, yes. Do I feel confident negotiating new pendant lights with my husband? Absolutely.
- Sell or Be Sold: How to Get Your Way in Business and In Life by Grant Cardone. Love him or hate him, Grant has built an empire in real estate investments and his net worth is sitting pretty at $300 million. He started out making $3,000/month at his sales job, and his growth started exploding when he applied the strategies he talks about in the book. He also has a country accent, so I feel right at home listening to his advice.
- Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits and Break Bad Ones by James Clear. The habit-stacking strategy in this book helped me become consistent about working out and I’ve lost 50 pounds! The book has nothing to do with weight loss, but the principles can be applied to all aspects of your life. This is truly one of my favorite business books.
- Extreme Ownership: How US Navy Seals Lead & Win by Jocko Willink & Leif Babin. This book is worth its weight in gold. My dad, the ultimate leader, gave Mike a copy for Christmas in 2018. Jocko details out how he takes ownership over everything, so there is absolutely no room for excuses. Jocko’s leadership method is extreme, but absolutely rock solid.
- The One Thing by Gary Keller. Yes, the Gary Keller of Keller Williams Real Estate. There is a reason why this best seller has been translated into 35 languages and voted in the coveted list of Top 100 Business Books of all time.
- Flip the Script: Getting People to Think Your Idea is Their Idea by Oren Klaff. These days, it isn’t enough to make a great pitch. Sales is the most competitive industry, and if you learn how to “flip the script”, you will be insanely successful in closing sales.
- Positive Personality Profiles: DISC by Dr. Robert Rohm. Understanding the different personality types is absolutely critical. After studying the DISC assessment, you will be able to classify someone in the first 10 seconds of meeting them. By classifying their personality, you can mold your body language, pitch, tone, and pace to subliminally connect on a deeper level with them. It is so much better than enneagram imo.
- Fanatical Prospecting by Jeb Blount. My mom raised me to follow the “ABC” method of selling. Always be closing. This book delves into the ABC method and details out exactly how to use your time efficiently to prospect for great success.
- 12 Rules for Life by Dr. Jordan Peterson. Truly an anecdote for chaos, this book distills the world’s wisdom into 12 practical and profound rules. Dr. Peterson is a world-renown psychologist.
- Start with Why by Simon Sinek. Simon lays out how great leaders inspire everyone to take action in this easy read. Start with Why shows that the leaders who’ve had the greatest influence in the world all think, act, and communicate the same way – and it’s the opposite of what everyone else does. Sinek calls this powerful idea The Golden Circle, and it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be led, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with why. Watch his ted talk on the book here.
- Exactly What to Say by Phil Jones. Sales is game of politics. Often times, the decision between you and a competitor is based on your ability to know exactly what to say, when to say it, and how to make it count. For less than $13, you can develop a fireproof method of confidently dominating your competitors and never fear not knowing what to say again.
- Presence by Amy Cuddy. I’m sad that this is the only book on my list written by a female author. Nonetheless, Amy is a powerhouse in accessing personal power. Have you ever left a nerve-racking challenge and immediately wished for a do over? I know I have. The very moments that require us to be genuine and commanding can instead cause us to feel phony and powerless. Too often we approach our lives’ biggest hurdles with dread, execute them with anxiety, and leave them with regret. Watch Amy Cuddy’s brilliant ted talk here.
