Hi from Girdwood!! Guys, I am on cloud 9 right now!
Yesterday, I took the trip of a lifetime with Ascending Path. We flew in a helicopter from Girdwood, landed on Spencer Glacier, and hiked for a little over 3 hours. It was totally surreal. 🙌
This was my first extended solo trip on a vacation, so I was slightly nervous to leave Mike with no cell reception for 6 hours. But wow, it is so worth it! Mike got to hike the super challenging “Bird Ridge Overlook”, so he was stoked.
Spencer Glacier was named in 1909 by U. S. Grant and D. F. Higgins, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), for a Mr. Spencer, paymaster of the Alaska Central RR., who fell in a crevasse in the glacier in 1906 and whose body was never recovered. I’m so glad I read that after I hiked it. 😯
You can only access this glacier by train & boat or by heli which made the experience so personal and intimate. I was so in love with the whole experience. I mean, I was freezing and didn’t bring enough layers. But I didn’t even care. The first time Benny hooked us up to the ropes and I stood over the edge of a moulin, my eyes filled with tears. It’s truly an experience you can’t put money on.
Thank you to everyone at Ascending Path (especially Nicole) for letting me live out my dream Alaskan adventure! And a huge thanks to Benny Lieb for making the experience absolutely unforgettable!
xx, Chels
