Have you googled “fall family photo outfit ideas” for your upcoming mini session and been disappointed with the 2009 inspo? Girl, same. In this post, we are going to talk about how to artfully craft the perfect coordinating outfit and I’m giving you 4 shoppable, versatile outfits to wear all season long.
I love seeing an aesthetic fall photo of a couple. Equally, it pains me when I see a photo where you can tell they were both like “nah, figuring out how to coordinate is too hard” and out pops another white collared shirt and denim framed photo.
1. Choose your outfits in advance
Some companies who rely on international manufacturing are still experiencing the “covid delay”, so make sure you start shopping as far in advance as you can. Most photographers are happy to give you feedback as well! These photos are by the fabulous Natasha Coyle.
2. Pick 3 colors
First of all, if you have not done a color analysis of your skin tone, go here. My results are shown below! You can upload a photo and it will tell you your best colors to wear given your hair, eyes, skin, and undertones.
My advice is to choose one of your “best colors”, and google the color palette for that specific color. For instance, I like the navy blue. I’m going to google “navy blue color palette” and here is what populates.
I chose my 3 colors for our outfits from the above color palette. Navy, Light Peach, and Dark Peach/Rust. Do you see how scientific the process is? Lol, all you see is a pretty photo but behind that photo is a whole dang formula for success! After all, “the best color in the world is the color that looks good on you!” -Coco Chanel.
For my cool tone gals, I used the same technique with gray in Fall Front Porch Decorating Tips & Our Fall Photoshoot!
3. Always take one thing off after getting dressed
“Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.” Coco Chanel nailed it once again. She most definitely was not talking about fall family photo outfit ideas, but the concept applies. More is definitely more. Take your necklace off if you have on statement earrings. The point is to see you guys complimented in your clothes, not be distracted by the jewelry, you know.
4. What will you do with this photo?
This is the biggest thing that Emily Eileen (our amazing wedding reception photog!) taught me when we were planning out group photos. Where will this photo end up? Make sure you get the post and portrait orientation that you want if this photo will end up as a holiday greeting card. Check to ensure you are wearing colors that compliment your home decor if you intend to frame it. Does the setting of the photo flow with your personalities and your home decor?
5. Take test photos!
This is only for the crazies like me. I can’t tell you how many times I have laid out outfits on the bed, they coordinate *perfectly* and then when we take the photos, I’m like….wait that’s not what I thought we were gonna look like lol. If you are going to dinner the week before, try putting the outfits on quickly before you change into your dinner clothes and snap a shot.
It doesn’t have to be a science, and you don’t have to follow any of these suggestions. The most important part of all is that you take the dang photo. Snap the memory, print it, and keep it to treasure forever! Let me know if these tips helped you!
