Our Kitchen Plans
Let’s start with one of my favorite rooms….the kitchen! After moving all over tarnation, we are finally (🤞🏽) settling down and building our dream home. Our builder and architect have been amazing so far to accommodate all of our customizations. It is a whole different story to work with a builder who asks you what you dream of instead of saying….this is how it is. I hope you like brown granite. Anyways, I might have to sell a couple of kidneys to make these dreams come to life…..but nevertheless, we will have a real HOME!
My vision for the kitchen is a clean, bright, welcoming space. Our exterior is a mix of Hardie Plank “Gray Mist”, “Arctic White”, light wood (front doors), and gold (pendants). I want to bring those same colors to our interior to make it all flow. Remember the insane 13′ island we had in Asheville?! Well, this one won’t be quite as enormous, but it is going to be exactly the gold & white kitchen I’ve always wanted!
Whenever we have people over, we always end up surrounding the island and talking for hours. This new home will be the first place where we are putting in barstools at the island! I used to dislike the look of barstools, but now I’m a woman of convenience. I see the benefit.
Cabinets
For our kitchen, we are opting to take the cabinets to the ceiling. Truly, I don’t understand why that isn’t the norm. I mean, that few inches of space is just going to collect dust and cluttered décor. Plus, taking the cabinets to the ceiling makes the room look much bigger. Our original home plans had a 10′ ceiling (like Asheville), but we have modified that to 9′ down and upstairs with 10′ ceilings in the living room. Bc #budget.
Our cabinets will be “Simply White” by Benjamin Moore.
Pendant Lights
Finally getting to use the Christmas presents from my parents last year. You might remember these insanely beautiful Minka Lavery pendants from this blog post.
Countertops
I am so excited about this part!! We are upgrading to white quartz countertops in the kitchen and 2 of the bathrooms. The quartz was probably the biggest ticket item I had to vet with Mike. While my favorite option is marble, I am self-aware enough to admit that keeping it etching and stain-free would give me more *anxiety* than it’s worth.
Quartz has that marble-esque look and comes with so many benefits. It is nonporous (unlike granite), so it is more resistant to bacteria. Quartz is harder than granite and nearly indestructible.
For the main island, we upgraded to a 3″ mitered edge. We almost went with a waterfall, but I don’t want to give up the extra storage and outlet in the island. And once again #budget.
The stone we are using, Calcatta Clasique, for the counters has a beautiful, strong veiling but it isn’t too “in your face”.
This one was a close second, but it will likely be on the master bathroom counters.
Backsplash
Looking at tile was so much fun. I’m still between this white glazed ceramic tile and this Montauk Fog tile.
Sink
Having an apron-front sink has always been a bucket list item for me in a home. We are installing a 36″ Kohler Single-Basin Cast Iron Sink. It will be so nice to be able to fit large pans!! MG better not use all that space to pile up dirty dishes…
Fixtures
Gold, baby! My dream faucet is this Waterstone Satin Brass Pull Down Faucet. Waterstone is one of the only faucet companies based and sustainably manufactured in the USA. But that is something we can upgrade to later on, so not a top priority. Budget-friendly options are this one under $200 from Amazon and this Kohler faucet. I am still undecided on the drawer pulls. I love the hammered brass cups!
Barstools
Also still undecided on barstools, but we won’t be buying those until we are in the house anyways. Probably going to hit up a Black Friday sale to snag these Scout & Nible stools.
Range Hood
We chose to stay basic for our range hood. I love a decorative one, but that could be an upgrade in a few years.
